Wireless Security Audits: Wireless Network (WLAN) Threat Assessment Audits

Wireless Security | Wireless Site Audit | Wireless Network Monitoring

Periodic Wireless Network Security Audits or Wireless LAN (WLAN) Threat Assessment Audits allow you to periodically check out the security (or a lack therefor) of your WLAN. It is prudent to assume that any device connected to a WLAN is always exposed to outside threats. It is important, therefore, to follow a well-thoughtout schedule that call for detailed, and frequent security audits of your WLAN.

When we conduct a WLAN Security Audits (often unannounced to most of the staff) at any of our customer's site, we test for (among other things) rogue Access Points (APs). If we find a rogue AP, we investigate it immediately. It is not uncommon for rogue APs to be introduced (intentionally or unintentionally) by someone on your staff who may be just trying to install, configure, or test an AP. They can also be introduced by someone trying to launch a classic man in the middle attack.

As a part of your WLAN security audit, we also test to see if any of your devices connected to your WLAN is transmitting in plain text -i.e. without making use of any type of data encryption. This is particularly important in the case of Wireless devices that are equipped with one or more Network Interface Cards or NICs. NICs usually allow for communication between the Wireless enabled device (by going through an AP), and the rest of your wired network. It is critical, therefore, that all wireless enabled devices are adequately secured -especially those that are connected to your wired network (LAN) as well.

During the course of a WLAN security Audit, we would also test for the integrity (or a breach thereof) of all of your other critical components (Firewalls, Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs), etc.) responsible for protecting the integrity of your entire network. We highly recommend the use of Firewalls and IDSs to adequately secure and protect your sensitive/proprietary data, the use of the strongest data encryption possible, and regular, periodic, and thorough check-ups (regular State of the Network Security Audits) of your entire wireless LAN.

If it has been some time since your Wireless Network was last certified to be in fully-secured mode, there is no better time to Schedule a WLAN security Audit than right now!
