Wireless Security

Wireless Security | Wireless Services Reference Desk

While it is true that there is no such thing as a completely secure wireless network, there are several steps that you can take to make your wireless LAN reasonably secure.

If an intruder is motivated enough, eventually she may break into your WLAN after having collected a significant amount of data-packets needed for deciphering your authentication credentials.

Any thing short of turning off your wireless gear or encasing your location in a tin-foil dome would not probably make your wireless LAN immune or invisible to unwashed masses. However, there is plenty that you can do to make your network hard enough for them to get into -including:

  • Clamp down on Rogue APs
  • Use Stronger Authentication Methods
  • Use Static IPs, Disable DHCP
  • User a Smaller Subnet with DHCP
  • Use a Non-Standard IP Address for your AP/Gateway
  • Use the Highest Encryption strength
  • Upgrade Firmware
  • Use VPN Tunnel

As you may see from the following pages, there are several things that you can do to securing your wireless network. It is this set of aforementioned measures that collectively bolster the security of your wireless network. Again, there is no such thing as absolute or foolproof security in wireless networking. All you are going to be able to do is to make it hard enough for someone to break into it.
