Wireless Site Analysis | Wireless Services Reference Desk

Have you wondered if your wireless connection to your Hotel's WLAN is secure enough? Are you taking adequate measures to protect your wireless enabled device, and your data, from unauthorized access?

This End-User Wireless FAQ document has been created to help you, the Hotel Guests, get the best out of your Hotel's WLAN -while potentially improving the security of your data.

These days, it is not too difficult to get your wi-fi enabled devices (laptop computers, PDAs, or other handheld devices) connected to your hotel's WLAN. However, doing so while protecting your equipment (and your data) from others that may be listening-in could sometimes be a real challenge.

Here are a few factors that may complicate your wireless connectivity to your Hotel's WLAN:

  • Out of date, unpatched, or non-standard Access Points, and Bridges,
  • Use of Access Points that may not be compatible with your wireless adapter,
  • Weak signal strength,
  • Interference from any radiating devices in the close proximity,
  • Unsecured WLAN equipment, possibly transmitting in plain text,
  • WLAN devices configured to use weak encryption keys,
  • Rogue APs listening in on your hotel's traffic, and
  • Persistent Session IDs, and/or Auth. tokens that do not expire for a long time.

As the information included on the following pages demonstrates, there are several things that you can do to not only enjoy faster data transfer rates while using your Hotel's WLAN, but also to greatly improve your chances of successfully protecting your wireless device(s), and your data, from unauthorized access.
