Using Zyxel Wireless Routers, Broadband Gateways, Access Points with Nintendo DS WFC

Nintendo wifi | Zyxel

If you are considering to use a Zyxel wireless router for setting up a wireless uplink for your Nintendo DS, and if you have not already produced a Zyxel device, we suggest you buy Zyxel model # P-334W -a somewhat older device, but known to work well Nintendo DS gaming consoles -or an updated version thereof. You may be able to get Zyxel wireless router # 660HW-61 to work with your Nintendo DS as well if you upgrade its firmware.

Interfacing a Zyxel wireless router with your Nintendo DS is essentially a two step process: First, you need to verify/document various settings on your Zyxel wireless router, and then you use those configuration details (that you have just now recorded off your Zyxel device) to create a matching Connection Save File on your Nintendo DS.

Therefore, we outline first below (1) how to Verify/update wireless networking/security parameters (SSID, Username, Password, WEP key, IP Address, MAC Address, etc.) on your Zyxel router, and then (2) provide you information on how to create a matching (mirrored) wifi connection profile (Connection Save Files -CSF 1, 2 or 3) on your Nintendo DS using the same.

To access Zyxel configuration/setup utility, launch a web browser (Internet Explorer, Opera, Firefox, or Netscape, etc.) on your computer, type in http://192.168.1.1 (default IP address for most Zyxel wireless devices) in your Internet browser's Location/Address bar, and then press Enter on your keyboard.

If presented with a user authentication (login) screen, try the following:
Default Username - Zyxel Wireless Router: N/A (none, leave blank)
Default Password - Zyxel Wireless Router : 1234

If you cannot login using the above, verify that (a) you are entering your password correctly, and that (b) your CAPSLOCK key is off. It could also be due to the firmware (a set of instructions stored on an EEPROM microchip) on your Zyxel product being corrupt. If so, you would need to reset your Zyxel WiFi router to its factory default settings.

IMPORTANT: Do not forget to promptly secure your Zyxel router (using a strong password, a non-obvious WEP Key, etc.) following a reset to factory default settings. Failing to do so may potentially expose your entire WLAN to scammers.

Login to Your Zyxel Wireless Router, and Proceed as Follows:

  • Retrieve/Change SSID on Your Zyxel WiFi Router: Go to the Wireless tab, and then over to the Wireless section to review/update SSID.

Default SSID on Zyxel Wireless Routers: Wireless

  • How to Access or Change WEP Keys on Zyxel Wireless Routers: To access the WEP information, go to the Wireless tab, then to the Wireless region.

Hint: To help troubleshoot WLAN connectivity issues, try a 64-bit (instead of using a 128 bit WEP key or WPA) WEP key first. Avoid WEP Key mismatch (typing errors, etc.) complications by using a simple/short (i.e. a 10 digit Hex Key such as 0123456789, 7777777777, 4444444444, etc.) WEP Key -especially while you are troubleshooting your wireless uplink. Make a note of your WEP Key because you will need it again for configuring a matching Connection Save File on your Nintendo DS.

  • To Verify or Update DHCP Settings on a Zyxel Router: Go to the LAN tab, then to the IP section.
  • To Verify or Update DNS Settings on Zyxel Routers: Go to the LAN tab, then to the IP section.
  • To Change Broadcast Settings on Zyxel Routers: Go to the Wireless tab, then to the MAC Filter section.

After having accurately documented (updated) various settings (such as password, SSID, WEP key, LAN interface IP Address, Mac Address, etc.) on your Zyxel router, the only thing that remains to be done is to create a matching Connection Save File (CSF 1, 2, or 3) on your Nintendo DS. If you are still having connectivity/stability issues with your wifi link, check out additional documentation available at this site and/or at manufacturer's support site. Consider upgrading firmware on your Zyxel router as well -if available.
