Using US Robotics Wireless Routers, Broad Gateways and Access Points with with Nintendo DS WFC
Configuring most of the newer US Robotics Wireless Access Points, US Robotics Routers and USR Gateways to support the good old 802.11b (wifi) interface built-in Nintendo DS gaming consoles is not that difficult -thanks to the fact that all such USR products (including their MAXg/802.11g based devices) provide backward compatibility to IEEE 802.11b standards.
Considering that most of these newer USR wireless products have many advanced features (such as Stateful Packet Inspection firewall, Wi-Fi Protected Access WPA and WPA2, WPA2/802.11i, WPA PSK, TKIP and AES Encryption, WDS Restrictions, and support for MAC address authentication), you may have to disable (or slacken) some of these advanced features to allow traffic from your Nintendo gaming console to get through.
In order to setup wireless connectivity between your Nintendo DS and a US Robotics device, you need to configure one of the three Connection Save Files (on your Nintendo) such that it knows the specifics (SSID identity, Network Address, Netmask, Password, WEP Key –if any, etc.) of the USR product it is supposed to uplinked to. Therefore, your need to first discover (and if needed reconfigure) settings used on your USR device, and then use that information to configure one of the "connection save files" on your Nintendo DS.
Therefore, this document first provides you (1) information on the details (settings) you need to verify off your USR device, and then (2) points you to step-by-step instructions on how to configure your Nintendo DS using the same.
Here is how to login to your USR Wireless Product: Launch a web browser (Internet Explorer, Opera, Firefox, or Netscape, etc.) on your computer, type in http://192.168.2.1 (default IP address for most US Robotics devices) in your web browser's URL/Location (Web Address) bar, and press Enter on your keyboard.
If presented with a user authentication (login) screen, try the following:
Default Username - USR Wireless Routers: none (leave blank)
Default Password - USR Wireless Routers: admin (lowercase)
If you cannot login using the above, ascertain that (a) you are not typing your password incorrectly, (b) your CAPSLOCK key is off, and that (c) someone else has not changed admin password on your US Robotics device. There is also a remote chance that the firmware (a set of instructions stored on an EEPROM microchip) on your USR product is somehow corrupted. Should that be the case, you will have to reset your US Robotics Wireless Router to its factory default settings.
NOTE: Do not forget to immediately secure your U.S. Robotics Wireless Product (by entering a strong password, and a non-obvious WEP Key, etc.) if you reset it (thereby wiping it clean) to factory default settings. Failing to do so may expose your entire WLAN (thereby possibly esposing all of your personal information as well) to scammers.
Login to Your USR Wireless Router, and Proceed as Follows:
- Retrieve/Change SSID on Your USR WiFi Router: Go to the Advanced Setup tab, Wireless section, and then to Channel and SSID to review/update SSID on your US Robotics Router.
Default SSID on USR Wireless Routers: USRxxxx Where “xxxx” is last four digits from your US Robotics Product Model Number. For example, SSID for U.S. Robotics Router Model # USR5462 is: USR5462
- How to Access or Change WEP Keys on USR Wireless Routers: To access the WEP information, go to the Advanced Setup tab, Wireless section, and Security.
Note: If you have trouble with your wireless link, try a 64-bit (instead of using a 128 bit WEP key or WPA) WEP key. To minimize WEP Key mismatch errors (due to typing errors, etc.), use a simple and short (i.e. a 10-digit Hex WEP Key such as 0123456789, 3333333333, 4444444444, etc.) during your troubleshooting sessions. Carefully write it down because you will need to reenter it on your Nintendo DS while creating a matching Connection Save File.
- To Verify or Update DHCP Settings on a USR Router: Go to the Advanced Setup tab, and then to LAN.
- To Verify or Update DNS Settings on USR Routers: Go to the Advanced Setup tab, then to WAN, and then over to DNS.
- To Change Broadcast Settings on USR Routers: Go to the Advanced tab, to Wireless section, and then to Channel SSID.
Having noted various settings (such as password, SSID, WEP key, LAN interface IP Address, Mac Address, etc.) off your USR router, the next thing to do is to create a matching Connection Save File (CSF 1, 2, or 3) on your Nintendo DS. For step by step instructions, read: How to Configure Nintendo DS WiFi Connection Save Files to Work with Your Wireless Router.
If you are still unable to setup a wifi link between your Nintendo DS and your USR Router, check out additional documentation available at this site. You may also want to check the date/version of the firmware installed on your USR device, and upgrade it if it is not up to date.
This document applies to most USR products including: Wireless MAXg products (Bridge USR5432, Range Extender USR5441, Access Point USR5451, Router USR5461, ADSL Gateway USR9108), USR 802.11g 54 Mbps products (Access Point USR5453, Wireless Network Starter Kit USR5470), USR Power Over Ethernet Kit USR5446, as well as USR268011, USR328022, USR5462, USR8011,USR8022,USR8054 and USR808054.
