Using IOGEAR Wireless Routers with Nintendo DS

IOGear | Nintendo wifi

IOGear Wireless-G Broadband (i.e. IEEE 802.11g compliant) Router Models # GWA504 and GWA502 may work with your Nintendo DS if you were to configure them to operate exclusively in IEEE 802.11b (wifi) mode. Furthermore, even though these IOGear wireless routers support several data encryption modes (i.e. WPA, 64 bit WEP ,128bit WEP, and AES), you may have to configure them to transmit in clear text (by disabling WEP altogether) if you are having problems in connecting your Nintendo DS to them.

In order to create a wireless link between your Nintendo DS and your IOGear wifi router, your would be configuring both of these devices such that their protocols, networking parameters, and security settings match. Essentially, it is a two step process: Step 1: Verify/Update wireless networking parameters on your IOGear router, and Step 2: Incorporate those settings in your Nintendo DS by saving them in one of the three Connection Save Files (CSF 1, 2 or 3).

Therefore, this document will first show you how to discover/set various wireless networking parameters (SSID, Username, Password, WEP key, IP Address, MAC Address, etc.) on your IOGear wireless router, and then point you to information on how to reconfigure your Nintendo DS using the same.

IOGear wireless router configuration application screens can be reached using HTTP protocol by launching a web browser on your computer, typing in http://192.168.62.10 in its URL/Location bar, and then hitting Enter on your keyboard.

If presented with a user authentication (login) screen, try the following:
Default IOGEAR Username: admin (lowercase only)
Default IOGEAR Password: admin (lowercase only)

If you have changed your admin password, you would need to enter that in stead of the default password stated above. If you have forgotten your admin password, or if your current password is no longer working (due to firmware being corrupt) on your IOGEAR router, you may have to reset your router to its factory default settings.

IMPORTANT: Do not forget to reapply stronger security measures (by making use of a stronger password, WEP Key, MAC Address filtering, etc.) every time you reset your wireless router to its factory default configuration.

Login to Your IOGear Router, and Proceed as Follows:

  • Retrieve/Change Your IOGear SSID: From the Custom tab, go to Wireless section and then over to the SSID Channel to review or update SSID on an IOGear wireless router.
The default SSID for IOGear wireless routers is: Wireless-G

  • How to Access or Change WEP Keys on Most IOGear Wireless Routers: To get to the WEP information, go to the Custom tab, then to Wireless section, and then over to the Authentication and Encryption area. Reconfigure it to use a 64-bit WEP key if it is setup to use a 128 bit WEP key or WPA for data encryption. Enter a simple 64 bit WEP Key (i.e. a simple 10-digit Hex WEP Key such as 0123456789 or 2222222222, etc.) on your AP, and make a note of it because you would need it later on for configuring your Nintendo DS. If you cannot get this wireless router to connect to your Nintendo DS even after configuring to use 64bit WEP, try again after setting it to use no security at all.
  • To Verify or Update DHCP Settings on IOGear Routers: Go to the Custom tab, then to LAN section, and then over to the DHCP Server area.
  • To Verify or Update DNS Settings on IOGear Routers: Go to the Custom tab, then to Wireless section, and then over to the Internet area.
  • To Verify or Update Broadcast Settings on IOGear Routers: From the Custom tab, go to Wireless section and then over to the SSID Channel area.

Now that you know how your IOGear router is setup (i.e. details such as username, password, SSID, WEP key, NIC IP Address, Mac Address, etc.), you are ready to configure one of the three Connection Save Files (CSF 1 thru 3) on your Nintendo DS using the same. Check out How to Configure Nintendo DS WiFi Connection Save Files to Work with Your Wireless Router for additional information.

This how-to document applies to both: IOGear Wireless-G Broadband (i.e. IEEE 802.11g compliant) Router Model # GWA504 and its older model # GWA502. However, if you are still having trouble in establishing a WiFi link between your IOGear wifi router and your Nintendo DS, we suggest you look for any additional information that may be available at this site and/or at the IOGear support site. Finally, consider upgrading firmware on your IOGear wifi router to its latest version.
