Using Hawking Wireless Broadband Gateways and Firewall Routers with Nintendo DS WFC

Hawking | Nintendo wifi

Getting some of the newer Hawking Technology Wireless products (such as their Hi-Gain Wireless-108G MIMO Routers, Wireless-G Dual WAN Firewall Routers, and Hi-Speed Wireless-G Routers) may prove to be a little more involved than setting up Hawking Router Model # HWR54G (ver M) for providing a wireless uplink to your Nintendo DS gaming console.

The process of setting up a wireless link between your Nintendo DS and a Hawking product is not different from the one you would follow while setting up a wifi link between your Nintendo DS and a wireless router/gateway of any other brand. Essentially, you would look up how various parameters on your router are configured, tweak its setting if necessary, and then create a connection profile (using one of the three Connection Save Files) on your Nintendo DS based on those parameters.

Therefore, this document first shows you how to verify/update wireless networking/security parameters (SSID, Username, Password, WEP key, IP Address, MAC Address, etc.) on your Hawking router, and then provides you information on how to create a matching connection profile (Connection Save Files -CSF 1, 2 or 3) on your Nintendo DS.

In order to review/update settings on your Hawking router, you need to login to it using your administrative account. To access its setup utility, launch your web browser (Internet Explorer, Opera, Firefox, or Netscape, etc.), type in http://192.168.1.254 (default IP address for most Hawking wireless devices) in your Internet browser's Location bar, and then press Enter on your keyboard.

If presented with a user authentication (login) screen, try the following:
Default Username - Hawking Wireless Router: admin (lowercase)
Default Password - Hawking Wireless Router : none (none, leave blank)

Try again if you cannot login using the above, but verify that (a) you are entering your password correctly, and that (b) your CAPSLOCK key is off. If still unsuccessful, it may be possibly due to the firmware (a set of instructions stored on an EEPROM microchip) on your Hawking router being corrupt. If so, you would have to reset your Hawking router to its factory default configuration.

NOTE: It is important to promptly secure your Hawking router (using a strong password, a non-obvious WEP Key, etc.) following a reset to factory default settings. Failing to do so may expose all your WLAN based resources to scammers.

Login to Your Hawking Wireless Router, and Proceed as Follows:

  • Retrieve/Change SSID on Your Hawking WiFi Router: Run the Setup Wizard and then go the Wireless area to review/update SSID.

Default SSID on Hawking Wireless Routers: untitled

  • How to Access or Change WEP Keys on Hawking Wireless Routers: To access the WEP information, run the Setup Wizard and then go to the Wireless region.

Hint: While troubleshooting, try a 64-bit (instead of using a 128 bit WEP key or WPA) WEP key first. To avoid WEP Key mismatch (typing errors, etc.) errors, use a simple/short (i.e. a 10 digit Hex Key such as 0123456789, 5555555555, 6666666666, etc.) WEP Key –especially during the initial trial runs. Write down your WEP Key –you will need it for configuring a matching Connection Save File on your Nintendo DS.

  • To Verify or Update DHCP Settings on a Hawking Router: Go to the Setup Wizard section.
  • To Verify or Update DNS Settings on Hawking Routers: Run the Setup Wizard and then go to the Wireless section.
  • To Change Broadcast Settings on Hawking Routers: NA

After having confirmed and accurately documented aforementioned settings (i.e. password, SSID, WEP key, LAN interface IP Address, Mac Address, etc.) on your Hawking router, it is time to create a matching Connection Save File (CSF 1, 2, or 3) on your Nintendo DS. Read How to Configure Nintendo DS WiFi Connection Save Files to Work with Your Wireless Router for detailed, step by step instructions.

Check out additional documentation available at this site and/or at manufacturer's support site if you are still having wireless connectivity (or link stability) issues. Look into upgrading firmware on your Hawking router as well -if available.

Various default settings and configuration details documented herein apply to most Hawking wireless products including: Hawking Technology Hi-Gain Wireless-108G MIMO Router with AMP (HWRGM1A), Wireless-G Dual WAN Firewall Router (H2WR54G), Hi-Speed Wireless-G Router (HWR54G), and Hawking Tech Wireless-B Firewall Router model # HWR258.
