Using D-Link Wireless Routers with Nintendo DS
Most D-Link wireless routers -including DLink model numbers DGL-4300 (ver A1), WBR-2310 (vA1), DI-614, DI-524 (ver C1), WBR-1310vA1, DI-624 ver C3, and D-Link DI-784 ver A1 -are compatible with Nintendo DS.
However, making some (older firmware?) D-Link routers (such as DI-514 ver B1 or DI-524 ver A) work with Nintendo DS might require additional tweaking -such as setting transmission (TX) rate to 54, and configuring them to operate in Mixed Mode, etc. It is best, therefore, to stick with (newer) D-Link routers that are known to work reliably with Nintendo WFC.
Establishing a wireless link between your Nintendo DS and D-Link wireless device is essentially a two step process: (1) Verify/Update how your D-Link router has been setup, and (2) Clone those parameters in your Nintendo DS by incorporating them in one of the three Connection Save Files (CSF 1, 2 or 3).
Therefore, this document first shows you how to discover/change various wireless networking configuration parameters (SSID, Username, Password, WEP key, IP Address, MAC Address, etc.) on most D-Link wireless routers, and then explains how to use them for identically reconfiguring your Nintendo DS. In other words, this document briefly outlines the process of configuring each of the two wlan end-point devices on your WiFi link so as to allow your Nintendo WFC gaming data/traffic traverse through them bi-directionally.
To access D-Link wireless router configuration application screens, launch your web browser, type in http://192.168.0.1 in its URL/Location bar, and then hit Enter on your keyboard.
If presented with a user authentication (login) screen, try the following:
Default D-Link Username: admin (lowercase only)
Default D-Link Password: none (leave blank)
The aforementioned username and password may not work if you have changed the admin password on your D-Link router. Similarly, if have lost your current administrative password, or if your current password is no longer working (possibly due to its firmware being corrupt) on your D-Link device, reset your router to its factory default settings. Do not forget to adequately secure your D-Link router every time you reset it to factory default configuration.
Login to Your D-Link Router, and Proceed as Follows:
- Retrieve/Change Your D-Link SSID: Go to the Home tab, and then click on the Wireless button to review or change SSID on your D-Link router.
Default SSID for most D-Link devices is: default (Note: it is all lowercase)
- How to Access or Change WEP Keys on Most D-Link Wireless Routers: For WEP information, go to Home tab, and then click on the Wireless button. You may not be able to see your actual WEP key if your router is obscuring it by displaying a bunch of "******" in stead of the actual WEP Key. Should that be the case, enter a new WEB key using ASCII, Hex or Passphrase WEP Key format. Even though most D-Link routers support both (10 digit/64 bit WEP, and the 26 digit/128-bit WEP) key formats, try using a simple 64 bit WEP Key (i.e. a simple 10-digit Hex WEP Key such as 0123456789 or 2222222222, etc.) first. Write down your new WEP key carefully because you would need it later on for configuring your Nintendo DS.
- To Verify or Update DHCP Settings on D-Link Routers: Go to the Home tab, then click on the DHCP button.
- To Verify or Update DNS Settings on D-Link Routers: Go to the Home tab, then click on the WAN button.
- To Verify or Update Broadcast Settings on D-Link Routers: Go to the Advanced tab, and then click on the Performance button.
Now that you have recorded these parameters (username, password, SSID, WEP key, NIC IP Address, Mac Address, etc.) from your D-Link wireless router configuration screens, you need to configure one of the three Connection Save Files (CSF 1 thru 3) on your Nintendo DS accordingly. Check out How to Configure Nintendo DS WiFi Connection Save Files to Work with Your Wireless Router for additional information.
This how-to document should be applicable to most D-Link routers including: DGL-4300 ver A1, DI-514 ver B1, DI-524 ver A, DI-524 ver C1, DI-524 ver E1, DI-614, DI-624 ver C3, DI-624M, DI-784 ver A1, DI-824 VUP, DSL-G604T, WBR-1310vA1, and WBR-2310vA1. However, if you are still having trouble in establishing a WiFi link between your D-Link wireless gateway router and your Nintendo DS, we suggest you review other documents related to this topic we may have available at this site. It may also be helpful to visit D-Link support site for any new/updated product documentation. Finally, consider upgrading firmware on your D-Link router to one of the latest versions.
