Using Buffalo Tech AirStation Wireless Routers with Nintendo DS
Most BuffaloTech AirStation WiFi routers (such as their model # WBR2-G54S) are known to work well when it comes to connecting your Nintendo DS (using its built-in WiFi interface) to your wireless/broadband uplink. It is more than likely that if configured properly, most late model wireless products from Buffalo Tech would also work seamlessly with your Nintendo DS / WFC capable gaming consoles.
In order to establish a wireless link between your Nintendo DS and your wireless router, you need to setup both devices such that they allow bi-directional wireless communication from each other. This document provides you information on how to discover various wireless networking parameters off select Buffalo Tech wireless routers, and then on using it for identically reconfiguring your Nintendo DS.
Just as all other data links, a wireless link between your Nintendo DS and your Buffalo Tech AirStation needs two fully functional end point devices configured to cooperate with each other. In order for your two wlan end-point devices to allow (your Nintendo WFC gaming) data traffic to pass through bi-directionally, they need to know each other’s identity (SSIDs), provide acceptable authentication credentials, use the same type of data encryption standards (the length of WEP key, the type of WEP key, and the actual WEP Key in itself) if any, and be configured so as to coexist on a wireless network segment without causing any networking (IP Address, MAC Address, etc.) conflicts.
To look up (or change) configuration parameters in most BuffaloTech AirStation devices, just type in http://192.168.11.1 in the URL/Location bar of your favorite web browser and hit Enter on your keyboard.
If presented with a user authentication (login) screen, try the following:
Username: root (lowercase only)
Password: none (leave blank)
The above mentioned username and password may not work if you have changed the admin password on your BuffaloTech router. If you do not recall your current administrative password, or if your current password is no longer working (due to its firmware being possibly corrupt), reset your BuffaloTech AirStation router to its factory default settings. Do not forget to properly secure it once again, though.
Login to Your Buffalo Tech Router, and Proceed as Follows:
- Retrieve SSID from your BuffaloTech WiFi Router: Go to the Advanced Settings tab, then to the LAN Settings tab, and then over to the Wireless tab of your router's configuration program. If needed, change your SSID here.
Default SSID for most Buffalo Tech devices is its MAC Address that can be easily found at the bottom of your Buffalo Tech AirStation device.
- How to Access or Change WEP Keys on Most BuffaloTech WiFi Routers: For WEP information, go to the Advanced Settings tab, then to the LAN Settings tab, and then over to the Wireless Wireless LAN Security section. If your router obscures the actual WEP key (by displaying a bunch of "******" in stead), enter a new WEB key using ASCII, Hex or Passphrase WEP Key format. Even though most BuffaloTech WiFi routers support both -the 10 digit (64 bit) and the 26 digit (128-bit) -WEP key formats, try using a simple 64 bit WEP Key (i.e. a simple 10-digit Hexadecimal WEP Key such as 0123456789 or 1111111111) first. Record your new WEP key carefully because you are going to need it for configuring your Nintendo DS.
- To Verify or Update DHCP Settings: Go to the Advanced Settings tab, then to the LAN Settings tab, and then over to the DHCP Server tab.
- To Verify or Update DNS Settings: Go to the Advanced Settings tab, then to the LAN Settings tab, and then over to the DHCP Server tab.
- To Verify or Update Broadcast Settings: Go to the Advanced Settings tab, then to the LAN Settings tab, and then over to the Wireless LAN Security tab.
Having recorded/reset aforementioned settings (password, SSID, WEP key, NIC IP Address, etc.) that your BuffaloTech wireless router is configured with, you can now proceed to using them to identically configure one of the three Connection Save Files (CSF 1 thru 3) on your Nintendo DS. Check out the following document for additional information on: How to Configure Nintendo DS WiFi Connection Save Files to Work with Your Wireless Router.
The information contained herein should apply to almost the entire line of BuffaloTech wireless products -including AirStation Nfiniti (Draft-N), AirStation Turbo A&G, AirStation MIMO, AirStation High Power Turbo G, AirStation Turbo G, as well as their AirStation G54 series devices such as WBR-G54, WBR2-G54S, WHR-HP-G54, WYR-G54, and WZR-G108.
However, if you are still having problems in setting up a WiFi link between your Buffalo Tech AirStation and Nintendo, we suggest you consider upgrading the firmware on your router to one of the latest versions -after having reviewed other documents we have available at this web site on this very subject.
