Using Actiontec Wireless Routers with Nintendo DS
Actiontec wireless router model # GT701-WG seems to be compatible with Nintendo DS –especially if you have the latest firmware running on your GT701-WG. Actiontec GT704-WG, on the other hand, is known to have issues communicating with Nintendo DS WiFi interface.
You will greatly improve your chances of making your Nintendo DS successfully connect to an Actiontec wireless router by ascertaining that you have the latest firmware/software running on your router. This is especially important if you did not purchase your router directly from a vendor recently, but received it packaged (i.e. bundled with a DSL service from a DSL provider such as Qwest, etc.) with a broadband service. Check with your broadband service provider if they have a custom-firmware upgrade available for your router.
Just like most other WiFi routers, you would essentially be figuring out authentication settings (password, SSID, Type of WEP Key Used, and the WEP Encryption Key itself) that your wireless router uses, it’s network parameters (IP Address, Netmask, Gateway, etc.), and then replicate them on your Nintendo DS.
On some of these Actiontec routers, you may have to explicitly enable the Wireless Feature by going through the Advanced Setup screen sequence.
Once you have configured both of your devices (Actiontec Wireless Router, and your Nintendo DS) identically, you will be all set to play online using Nintendo WFC.
In order to access (and possibly reconfigure) your Actiontec WiFi router, you need to power it up, and then connect to it using HTTP. Launch a web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, etc.) on your computer, enter your Actiontec router’s network address (which is usually http://192.168.0.1) in your web browser's address (URL) bar, hit Enter on your keyboard, and wait for it to get connectted to your wireless router's built-in Web (HTTP) Server.
If it prompts your for authentication details, enter your secret password to access your Actiontec router’s configuration screens. If this is the first time you are connecting to your Actiontec router (or if it has been recently reset to factory defaults), try the following default values for username and password:
Default Username on ActionTec Routers: admin (lowercase only)
Default Password on ActionTec Routers: None (leave blank)
If it does not let you in using your current password (or using aforementioned default values), you may have to reset your Actiontec router to its factory default settings. Should you wind up doing a reset to factory defaults, do not forget to reapply all your security settings as soon as it is powered up again.
Login as Administrator, and proceed as follows:
- Retrieve SSID from your Actiontec WiFI Router: Go to the Wireless Settings tab of your Actiontec router's setup utility to review or change the SSID.
The default SSID on most Actiontec routers is: ACTIONTEC (Note: It is all UPPERCASE)
Remember: SSIDs are caSesENsItiVE -write it down carefully if you are changing it.
- How to Access or Change WEP Keys on Actiontec WiFi Routers: WEP information for an Actiontec router can be accessed/updated by going to the WEP area on the Wireless Settings tab of your Actiontec router's setup application. If your router is not hiding it, copy down your WEP Key on a paper exactly -you are going to need it if you were to manually configure your Nintendo DS. However, if your router obscures the WEP key (shows a bunch of ****** in stead), enter a new WEB key (in ASCII, Hex or Passphrase format) using this screen. You can either enter a 10 digit (64 bit) or 26 digit (128-bit) WEP key. Try 64 bit WEP Key (10-digit WEP Key) first. Write it down carefully because you will have to enter it in your Nintendo DS.
Once you have obtained (or reset) these network access parameters (password, SSID, WEP key) off your wireless router, configure one of the three Connection Save Files (CSF 1 thru 3) on your Nintendo DS using the same. Check out other documents available at this site for detailed information on how to configure your Nintendo DS using Search for an AP, AOSS, or the Manual Configuration method.
The above instructions ought to apply to both (the Actiontec GT701-WG as well as Actiontec GT704-WG) routers. However, you may want to check with your broadband DSL provider for more up-to-date/accurate information –especially if they have preconfigured your Actiontec ireless router using a cuctom version of provider-specific firmware.
