Using 3Com Wireless Routers with Nintendo DS
One of the wireless routers known to work well with Nintendo DS (and hence often recommended) is 3Com’s wireless router model# 3CRWE554G72TU.
Configuring your Nintendo DS to work with your 3Com wireless browser is rather easy. All you need to do is first figure out how your 3Com router is setup (IP address, password, SSID, WEK Key etc.), or reconfigure it afresh; and then mirror those settings in your Nintendo DS. Once you have matched those settings on your devices (wifi router, and your Nintendo DS), you will be all set to play online using Nintendo WFC.
To review/confirm how your 3Com wireless router is setup, simply power it up and launch your Internet browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, etc.) on your computer. Enter http://192.168.1.1 in your web browser's address (URL) bar, and you will be connected to your wireless router's built-in Web Server.
Your 3Com router may ask you for administrative access authentication. Enter your secret password and login. If this is the first time you are connecting to your 3Com router (or if it has been recently reset to factory defaults), try the following default values for username and password:
Default Username on 3Com Routers: none (not applicable)
Default Password on 3Com Routers: admin (lowercase only)
If you cannot login using your current password or using the default values mentioned above, you may need to reset your 3Com router to its factory default configuration. Should there be a need to do that, please do not forget to reapply all your security settings as soon as it has been reset and you are able to login again. There are several informational documents available at this site on how to do a factory reset, as well as on how to tighten up security on wireless routers.
Once you have gained administrative access to your 3Com wifi router, proceed as follows:
- Retrieve SSID from your 3Com Router: Here is how to find or change the SSID on your 3Com wifi Router: Go to the Configuration area under the Wireless Settings section of your 3Com router's setup utility, and write down the SSID -exactly as it is shown on that screen. You may need that later on to configure your Nintendo DS. Remember, SSIDs are caSesENsItiVE -so write it down exactly preserving it's (upper or lower) case.
The default SSID on most 3Com wireless routers is: 3Com (Note: Letter “C” is UPPERCASE)
- How to Access or Change WEP Keys on 3Com WiFi Routers: WEP information for a 3Com router can be retrieved/set by going to the Encryption area in the Wireless Settings section of your 3Com router's setup utility. If your router is not obscuring WEP keys, Copy it down on a paper exactly -should there be a need for you to enter it manually in your Nintendo DS. If your router obscures it (shows a bunch of ****** in stead), you may have to enter a new WEB key (in ASCII, Hex or Passphrase format) using this screen. You can either enter a 10 digit (64 bit) or 26 digit (128-bit) WEP key. Try 64 bit WEP Key (10-digit WEP Key) first. Write it down carefully because you are going to have to enter it in your Nintendo DS.
Note: Even though most routers allow you to enter up to 4 WEB keys, only the first WEB key matters as far as your Nintendo DS is concerned. It is so because Nintendo DS recognizes only the first (#1) WEP key entered in your router's WEP settings screen.
Once you have retrieved (or reconfigured) these network access parameters (password, SSID, WEP key) on your 3Com wireless gear, you would then use them to configure one of the three Connection Save Files (CSF 1 thru 3) on your Nintendo DS. For step by step instruction on how to configure your Nintendo DS using Search for an AP, AOSS, or Manual Configuration methods, check out other documents available at this website.
The above instructions may also apply to other 3Com wireless devices including: 3CRWDR100A-72, 3CRWDR100B-72, 3CRWDR100U-72, 3CRWE554G72T, 3CRWE554G72TU, 3CRWE754G72-A, 3CRWE754G72-B, WL-540A, and WL-540B.
