2Wire's HomePortal® 4000 series iNIDs (intelligent Network Interface Devices) are outdoors home gateways encased in a hardened, weather-resistant enclosure. They are ideally sited for VDSL2 and FTTP deployments. By making various intelligent gateway functions as well as all service and network termination points to the outside of the house, the 2Wire iNIDs eliminate the need for any in-home wiring for bringing DSL into the house. Power required for this outdoor iNID is provisioned through home phone wiring using a customer-installable power module.

Designed to allow for the IP based delivery of video and other high-bandwidth media applications, these 2Wire iNIDs provide multiple network interfaces including: high speed coaxial networking (HomePNAv3), Ethernet. Wireless capability is not included in the standard product packaging, but is available as an optional add-on in the form of a customer-installable module that accords it a plug-and-play 802.11g Wi-Fi access point functionality. Security capabilities integrated into these iNIDs include support for Content Screening, Internet Access Control, Firewall Monitor, and Web Remote Access.

Using 2Wire Wireless Broadband Gateways for VoIP, Multimedia, and Online Gameplay

Most 2Wire wireless routers include a host of features including a built-in wireless access point, modem, router, VoIP, and a firewall.

Newer 2Wire residential gateways and 2Wire OfficePortal™ broadband routers not only have a super-fast ADSL modem, but also a professional-grade firewall and support for integrated voice over IP.

Interestingly, even though most 2Wire products have a Professional Grade Firewall capable of actively protecting your network from Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks using Stateful Packet Inspection, its configuration is simple enough for most home users and online gaming (multiplay) console users.

Every 2Wire 802.11g-enabled gateway is Wi-Fi certified and natively supports the 802.11b mode needed for connecting your Nintendo DS to a wireless network.
