Resetting / Changing Password on Linksys Wireless, DSL Broadband Access Points & Routers
Linksys products come preconfigured with a default username and password setting. These usernames and passwords are not unique to your wireless gear -they are usually the same on every piece of wifi gear across a Linksys product-lines.
It is important, therefore, that you change your password to something that is more private, and not too obvious. Generally speaking, using one or more numerals or punctuation marks within first 8 characters of your password is almost always a good idea. Depending upon the brand, make and model of your wifi gear, you may be restricted to using alphanumeric characters, dashes, and spaces. Check your user manual to see if any other characters (punctuation marks, etc.) are allowed.
You can reach Linksys product configuration screens by establishing a connection to the default network (IP) address that your wifi gear has been preprogrammed with. Depending upon the type of product you have, you may have to do so using a method (HTTP, Telnet, etc.) that may be appropriate for your networking hardware.
We have listed below default usernames, passwords, access method to be used, and default IP addresses some of these Linksys units come preset with:
- Access Method: Telnet
- User ID: (leave blank)
- Password: admin (lowercase only)
- Access Level: Administrator level access
Most Linksys Wireless Routers including WAP54G, WET54G, WRT54G:
- Access Method: HTTP

Linksys WAP11, PSUS4:

Several other Linksys products (including WAG54G, WCG200, etc.) come preconfigured to have either blank/admin or admin/admin for username and password respectively. Most devices are setup to 192.168.1.1, but a few of Linksys products have their network interface assigned to 192.168.254.254. Double check your product documentation to find out how your product has been preconfigured prior to shipping.
Seeing how predictable the default usernames and passwords are from the above, it should be evident that changing the password to something more private should be the first thing to do after powering up your new wifi gear.
If you have difficulty logging in, double-check your password (if any), and verify that your CAPSLOCK key is not on. If all else fails, use that little push button at the back of your Linksys unit to reset your unit to factory defaults. You may have to hold the button down for anywhere between 10 to 30 seconds -check your product manual for specifics.
