Resetting / Changing Password on D-Link Wireless, DSL Routers, Broadband Access Points

D-Link | Wireless Security | Wireless Services Reference Desk

All D-Link products have a preset/default username and password factory installed. These usernames and passwords are not set to be unique to your DLink wireless gear -they are used on every piece of wifi gear made by D-Link -at least in that networking product category.

You should consider changing your password as soon as you power up your DLink product. Consider using one (if not more) numbers or punctuation marks (preferably within first 8 characters) in your new password. Check your D-Link product documentation for a list of allowed "special characters" -if any.

You would need a web browser (or for some products, may be a Telnet client) to access D-Link product configuration screens. Your product documentation will show you the IP address (IP is usually 192.168.0.1, and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0) they have assigned to the network interface (NIC) that is built into your wireless device. Use the access method as specified by DLink (HTTP, Telnet, etc.), and type in the IP address of your new hardware.

The DLink software would now prompt for username and password before it allows you access to various configuration screens. For your ready reference, we have listed below default usernames, passwords, access methods to be used, and default IP addresses that are "factory set" on various D-Link products:

D-Link DI Product Line: Including DI-614, DI-624, DI-624+.

  1. Access Method: HTTP
  2. User ID: admin (lowercase only)
  3. Password: (leave blank)
  4. Access Level: Administrator level access
  5. Default IP: 192.168.0.1 (check your manual)

D-Link DSL Product Line: Including DSL-604+, DSL-G604T.

  1. Access Method: HTTP
  2. User ID: admin (lowercase only)
  3. Password: (leave blank)
  4. Access Level: Administrator level access
  5. Default IP: 192.168.0.1 (check your manual)

D-Link DWL Product Line: Including DWL-1000+, DWL-2000AP+, DWL-7000AP, DWL-700AP
DWL-810+, DWL-900, DWL-900+.

  1. Access Method: HTTP
  2. User ID: admin (lowercase only)
  3. Password: (leave blank)
  4. Access Level: Administrator level access
  5. Default IP: 192.168.0.1 (check your manual)

To change you password, launch your configuration screen (by typing in 192.168.0.1 in the address bar of your Internet browser), Login using default username and password as above, and then click on "Run Wizard." You will have an option to Set your new password, Set your time zone, and to Set Internet connection. Follow the screen prompts, and restart your DLINK router/modem when done.

If you are having trouble resetting your password, double check your product documentation to find out how your product has been preconfigured prior to shipping. If you still cannot log in, double-check your password (if any), and make sure that your CAPSLOCK key is off. If all else fails, use that little "reset" button at the back of your D-Link router/modem and hold it down for 10 to 30 seconds (depends on your unit) to restore your networking hardware to factory default settings; and start over.

Now that you know how predictable DLink's default usernames and passwords are, installing a new (more robust) password should be on the top of your agenda.
