Disabling Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on Windows 98 2nd Edition, Windows ME, and XP PCs

Nintendo wifi | Wireless USB Connector | Wireless Software

An active link to the Internet is needed for installing, configuring and using the Nintendo DS WiFi USB connector on Microsoft Windows XP personal computers.

It is important, therefore, that you install Nintendo USB adapter on a computer that has a fully operational (active/working) link to the Internet. Even if your computer is on a LAN that shares a broadband Internet connection, your first choice for installing Nintendo DS Wifi Connector ought to be the computer to which your broadband interface device (such as an ADSL modem, a broadband Cable Modem, a Router, or an Internet Gateway device) is directly connected to.

If you are indeed trying to connect/install your Nintendo DS USB Connector on a PC that is directly connected to your Broadband Internet device, but are having difficulties; you may want to disable Internet Connection Sharing on it to troubleshoot and isolate any installation/configuration issues related to ICS.

Here is How to Disable/Remove Internet Connection Sharing on Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition and Microsoft Windows 98 2nd Edition PCs:

  • Click on Start, then move your mouse to Settings, and then click on Control Panel
  • Double-click on Internet
  • Click on the Connection tab, and then click on the Sharing tab
  • Click to select the Disable Internet Connection Sharing check box, and click OK twice on your way out of that screen sequence.

The steps listed above would allow you to disable ICS without having to restart your Windows XP computer. This comes particularly handy if you want to (temporarily) disable ICS without deactivating the Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP) services on your computer. However, if you wish to permanently Disable/Remove Internet Connection Sharing on your (older Win98 2nd Edition) Windows PCs, use the ICS.ADM policy file located in the Tools\Mtsutil\ICS folder on the Windows 98 2E CD-ROM.

Disabling Internet Connection Sharing on Windows XP and Various Win2k Family of Windows Operating Systems:

  • Click on Start, then move your mouse to Settings, and then click on Control Panel
  • Go to the Network and Internet Connections area, and select Network Connections
  • Right Click on your Dial-up (or your broadband connection), and select Properties
  • Go to the Advanced tab while you are on the Properties screen
  • Uncheck the box to the left of: Allow other network users through this computers Internet connection label within the Internet Connection Sharing area on this screen.

Disabling Internet Connection Sharing may particularly be helpful to you if you are still running an older (unpatched) version of Windows OS that had a bug making it to (incorrectly) route all Internet bound traffic to itself -if it were setup to Allow Internet Connection Sharing.

With ICS disabled on your PC, ascertain that its direct link to your Internet gateway is active, and then try to install your Nintendo DS WiFi USB Connector once again.
