3Com Wireless Bridges, Printer Servers : Remove / Change Factory Default Password For WLAN Security

3Com | Bridge | Ethernet | Router | Wireless Security | Wireless Networking Hardware

This document provides information on default factory setting parameters for various 3Com Wireless (indoor and outdoor) Bridges, as well as specialty 3Com products such as 3Com Wireless Print Servers.

Prior to shipping, these 3Com Wireless Networking devices are setup to use factory default authentication settings (i.e. Administrator User ID and full-access Administrative Password) that are not unique to your particular unit –they are likely to be exactly the same on every wireless bridge and wireless print server manufactured by 3Com.

It is essential, therefore, that you change the password on your 3Com wifi gear to a non-obvious/private passphrase as soon as you power it up for the first time; or every time you reset your wireless bridge/print-server to factory default settings.

Listed below are factory default settings (i.e. Default Username, Default Password, Default Access method, Default IP address, and Netmask for the Ethernet/LAN Interface) that various 3Com Wireless bridging units, and 3Com Wireless Print Servers are preconfigured to.

3Com® 11g 54Mbps Wireless LAN Outdoor Building-to-Building Bridge

Now that you know these factory default values for username/password for administrative access to your Wifi Bridge and/or Print Server are a matter of public knowledge, it is time to change the password to something more secure. Consider using a strong password that includes at least one (or more) numerals and/or punctuation marks within the first 8 characters.

Process of doing a factory reset (or an in situ EEPROM firmware refresh/upgrade) is more or less the same on most 3Com® products. Therefore, if you have a 3Com product that may not be listed here (such as 3Com Wireless 11a/b/g PC Card with XJACK® Antenna, 3Com® Wireless 11a/b/g PCI Adapter, 3Com® OfficeConnect® Wireless 54 Mbps 11g PC Card, 3Com® OfficeConnect® Wireless 108Mbps 11g XJACK PC Card 3Com OfficeConnect Wireless 108Mbps 11g USB Adapter, 3Com® OfficeConnect® Wireless 54Mbps 11g Compact USB Adapter, 3CRWE62092B, 3CRPAG175, 3Com® Wireless LAN Controller WX4400, 3Com® Wireless LAN Switch WX1200, 3Com® WXR100 Remote Office Wireless LAN Switch, 3Com® Wireless Switch Manager) or on other/similar documents available at this site; review your product manuals for instruction on resetting it to factory defaults –especially if everything else has failed.

Even if your 3Com product/model is not covered in here, it is quite likely that it may be shipped after being preconfigured to use one of the following: admin/blank, blank/admin, or admin/admin for default username and default admin password respectively. Similarly, just like most other 3Com products, your device may also have it’s Ethernet LAN Interface preset to: 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0, 192.168.2.1/255.255.255.0 or 192.168.*.254/255.255.255.0. Review your product documentation to ascertain the actual factory default settings that may have been preprogrammed/preset in your particular 3Com product.

Again, please do not run your 3Com networking hardware using factory default values -unless of course, you wish to open up all your network resources to abuse from the unknown.
